Final Project Proposal – Android Artwork

Title of the artwork: [Undecided]

Goals of the artwork: This android artwork attempts to enlighten people’s awareness toward the relationship between human and robots/cyborgs. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to think about the gender and race of a robot by watching and hearing the reactions of this robot.

Intended Audience: Intended audience can be anyone who lives this digital world regardless their gender, race, and/or ability. Especially, I would like to deliver the message to people who have never thought about the hierarchical relationship between R2D2/C-3PO and Luke Skywalker.


This project will critically point out the hierarchical relationship, in other word, the relationship of a master and slave between human and robot. Like how to Paik deconstructed binary logic between the human and machine, I would like to implement “humanization” to my robot. For me, humanization of the robot is giving it emotions and reactions.

“…Paik’s deployment of racial recalibration puts pressure on the human/machine binary and deconstructing binary logic, embracing creativity and transforming meanings of race and becoming human(Rhee, 297).” 

Thus, we should consider that the slavery has just changed the subject but still clearly exists in the human history. In addition to that, audiences also can think about the race of this robot. Inspired this question “why do Siri and most of car navigation systems are using voice of white female?” this robot will speak English with strong and exaggerated Konglish* accent.

Audiences will hear some sentences which they get from Siri or Cortana which are spoken with the voice of white female. Expected reactions from audiences will vary, but hopefully some of them can think that popularized notion and stereotype of the gender and race of robots and cyborgs.

Description of the robot performance:

Main movement of my robot is “reaction” that will give the sense “humanization” to my robot. First the robot will introduce itself and it will interact with audiences. The interaction will be initiated by audience, when they use certain words such as, “hello” or “how are you”. The robot will react based on what audiences say. Separate audio input device and a small computer will handle the basic speech recognition. The reaction of the robot is transmitted to the Arduino through serial port and it is shown through the movement of the servo or LCD.

Separate audio input device and a small computer will handle the basic speech recognition. Small WPF application is programmed to react to certain predetermined key phrases. The voice recognition is done through Microsoft Speech Platform. The application also opens a serial port and send signal to Arduino that contains instruction on what Arduino should do to control the servo and LCD.

Component List: Kinect, Kangaroo PC, Arduino Redboard, breadboard, Wires, Knob, Survo, speaker.
